Redaction comes from two places: friendship and the desire to say something meaningful about how lives get wrecked by the criminal justice system. Bringing together my poems and the artwork of Titus Kaphar, we turned Redaction, our Museum of Modern Art exhibition of prints, into a collection that also includes new poems by me and artwork by Titus. We consider this the third official exhibition of Redaction, a way to bring a New York art exhibit to your home. Printed on three distinct papers, each echoing the textures of erasure, emergence, and endurance. And the poems—this is the first time I’ve written outside the boundaries of prison and suffering. This book is a work of protest and an invitation to rethink what justice and love of family and community can be.
